Despite the Bombay High Court staying the reservation granted to Maratha Community in 2015 and the matter was pending was final adjudication, there were street protests and agitations demanding reservation for Maratha Community. Maharashtra government formed a new commission under Justice Gaikwad Commission. This Commission recommended 16% reservation to the Maratha Community in the State of Maharashtra. Based on Gaikwad Commission Report, the State of Maharashtra provided exclusive reservation of 16% to the Maratha Community. Five Judge Constitution of Bench of the Honourable Supreme Court rejected the recommendations of the Gaikwad Commission Report and struck down the law providing 16% reservation the Maratha Community. Honourable Supreme Court concluded that Marathas are dominant forward class and in the mainstream of national life.
