More seats in PGI to provide for OBC quota

NEW DELHI: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs on Thursday approved a Health Ministry proposal for increasing seats in the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, for implementing the Act on 27 per cent reservation for the Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

An additional 214 postgraduate seats will be created, increasing the total number from 396 to 610. In nursing courses, 192 more seats will be created, taking the total to 552. With an addition of 87 seats, the total number in paramedical courses will go up to 247.

With the introduction of the 27 per cent quota for the OBCs in all institutes under the Central government, the total percentage of reservation will go up from 22.5 to 49.5.
